Companies that Rock
I remember using Tom’s Fennel toothpaste as a child. The smell and taste of it alone brings me back to my childhood bathroom and to the ritual of bedtime. I’m happy to see Tom’s of Maine in the toothpaste aisle of every major pharmacy and store. Tom Chappelle and his wife Kate started Tom’s of Maine in 1970. With only a budget of $5000 their intention was to simply make natural personal care...

Not So Scary Spirituality
As a yoga teacher, I constantly remind my students that the practice is about way more than their physical body. We can get stuck in how good the asana can feel and how much we enjoy the strength and flexibility that grows out of our hard work.
What a rude awakening it was for me when my doctor told me to “Slow Down” during the 7th month of my pregnancy and that included no more high intensity...

Spots I Dig
Disconnected from nature? A common complaint for the Manhattan resident. Wander over to the Union Square Market and let the mix of colors remind you of nature’s beauty. What I love most this time of year is the collision of seasons- tomatoes next to potatoes, peppers next to brussel sprouts, the last bits of summer giving way to the Fall’s harvest. The Green Market is a place to reconnect...

Looks I Love
I love seeing an environmentally conscious designer receiving accolades from the high-end, traditional fashion world. John Patrick Organic has managed to garner the respect of reputable fashion mavens, which is something hard to do when you are defined as “green.” His looks are elegant and stylish but still maintain the high standards of staying organic. “I am just trying to blend ethics and...

A Well of Wellness
Colors contribute greatly to balance in the body. According to Ayurveda, everything in the universe is energetic and gives off a vibration including colors. Since autumn becomes cool, balance out the shift in weather by wearing warmer colors- the colors you see naturally occurring in nature- yellows, oranges, and reds. Especially beautiful colors in thicker materials like wools and cashmere.

What Am I Reading Now?
With my first baby on the way, I find myself anticipating sleepless nights and inconsolable screaming! The book to read, so Mommy’s have told me, is The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp, a book that takes a good hard look at why newborns cry. Dr. Karp’s thesis makes complete sense to me- baby’s are born after 9 months but truly need another trimester to actually be a little bigger,...

Social Good Summit
During the week of Monday September 19th through Thursday September 22nd 2011 at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y, Do-Gooders from around the globe gathered to discuss the environment, business, and social good. I went, curious to hear the thoughts of people like Ted Turner, Christy Turlington, Desmond Tutu, and Scott Harrison, founder of Charity Water. What I came away with was more than the expected...
