I met Susan trying on shoes in Madewell. We both had our newborns in carriers, so slipping flats on and off were about the only thing we could do from a shopping standpoint. When I found out that Susan was Susan Lazar, designer of Egg Baby NYC, I was really excited. One of my favorite baby gifts when my son was born was an adorable winter hat with little ears and whiskers that made him look like a mouse. The hat came with matching mittens. The look on a newborn was just too precious. After exchanging cards, I went home and looked Egg up. Drooling mommy. Gorgeous baby clothes with an edge and that’s what I’m always looking for to dress my urban baby. But what I love most is Susan’s attention to what matters most: quality material, organic cotton, designs that take real people into consideration. Egg is found not only at Giggle but in its own boutiques in Tribeca and Dumbo. Through a series of fun email dialogues, I asked Susan some questions about her life and inspiration. I had to share her thoughtful responses- they will give you a feeling for what goes into Egg Baby clothing design and the company itself. I’m also fascinated by women who are creating their vision while simultaneously juggling motherhood!
Randi: How did you come up with the inspiration for your company?
Susan: I wanted to create a brand with meaning - a brand with a soul so to speak. My womenswear company that I had before “Susan Lazar” was just a brand but I wanted Egg to be meaningful to the customer. Egg highlights and focuses on the connection between the parent and child and celebrates that pure love. Also, Egg is a brand that focuses on its own successes as well as helping others in need. We feature a children’s charity every season and we design a t-shirt around that cause.
Randi: How has your business life/perspective changed since having your own baby?
Susan: I’ve always wanted to be a mother and it’s even better than I had ever imagined! The love I feel for my new baby daughter is beyond anything I have ever felt before. Also as I get ready to design Fall 2013, I now have real life experience and it’s those little details that Mommies need that help me make my designs even better.
Randi: What do you do to take care of your mind/body?
Susan: Right now I’m trying to lose the pregnancy weight so I’m doing Bikram Yoga Yoga, going to the gym and running outside; its been a lot of work. I was also going some Chi Quong in Israel last year, as well as meditation. I need to start that again.
Randi: Tell us more about the consciousness behind egg.
Susan: Egg is about the inner beauty that exists in all of us. It’s about our potential. Like eggs, they all look the same on the outside but it’s the inside that counts.
Randi: Do you design all of the baby clothing for Egg?
Susan: Yes, I am the designer for the clothing and the creative director for the brand.
Randi: Where do you see Egg going next?
Susan: Retail! Online and brick and mortar stores.
Randi: What gives you personal fulfillment?
Susan: Learning new things.
Randi: What is your typical day like?
Susan: Now with the baby my time management has been thrown off completely so I’m up at 6am or so and then it’s a blur till about noon. Then I work a bit, exercise and come home again to be with the baby and put her to bed- one of my favorite things!
